How can we alter kana shapes to improve their visual distinctiveness?
Written Japanese makes use of kanji characters plus two phonetic syllabaries; hiragana and katakana. Some of the symbols can be easily confused, and by examining which ones foreign people studying Japanese confuse easily we may be able to design more visually distinct character shapes.
Problem kana include:
- 「さ」and「き」
- 「ノ」,「ン」,「ソ」and「リ/り」
- 「し」and the first half of「い」
- 「せ」and「サ」
- 「や」and「セ」
- 「ク」and「ワ」
- 「ア」and「マ」
- 『ユ』and「コ」
